Fashion is more than a statement about oneself; the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) has proven with its Fashion For Haiti initiative, that fashion can make just as clear and powerful a statement about the world as it does about style. Even months after the devastating earthquake that claimed the lives of thousands and left many more without family members or even basic necessities, help from more prosperous nations is still needed, and the CFDA continues to do its part to aid Haiti’s orphans and struggling survivors.
A mere $25 is not a high price to pay to provide meals and medical care to Haitian children, adults and the elderly bereft of basic means of survival. The CFDA designed a t-shirt, selling for $25 at 16 retailers around the country to raise funds for former President Bill Clinton’s and former President Bush’s Haiti program that will provide long-term solutions to Haiti’s formidable problems, and will allow the nation to rebuild after its profound crisis.

The shirts have a white background with bold black and green letters which express love for the island nation, depicted on the graphic design, with the words “Hope, Help, Heal, Haiti” at the bottom. CFDA members can be seen sporting the shirts, Beyonce and other celebrities have worn the t-shirt to promote aid for Haiti. A matching tote bag with the plaintive plea splashed in blue and red,“Feed Haiti” can also be purchased at a minimal cost, but the sale of each bag will be enough to provide 50 meals for Haitian school children.
“The devastation in Haiti has touched us all deeply. Now more than ever is the time to …help them get back on the road to recovery,” says Tory Burch prominent designer of women’s casual wear and head of the Tory Burch Foundation, which aids women and families throughout the U.S. Her charity specializes in microfinance and granting loans to small businesses as a way of creating jobs and fostering independence. Tory Burch is also on the board of the CFDA.

Tory Burch’s vision in America to create long-term growth and economic stability can be applied to the rebuilding process in Haiti, and these efforts are aided by the CFDA and the Clinton Bush Haitian initiative. Fashion is not just about looking great on the outside, but about feeling great on the inside and wearing a glow from the heart generated from the warmth of helping others help themselves.
