Competition - It leads dogs to bark and market traders to bite. Say what you will about competition, without it, we would be living in a dull world. And in the industry of fashion design, competition is the whetstone on which talent is honed; although one cannot make it on talent alone. Perseverance, an ability to adapt and a keen understanding of marketing are equally important when navigating the rough seas of high fashion. In the last century fashion design has achieved recognition as an authentic representation of American art and culture. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) has committed itself to the development of the American fashion industry and has distinguished itself as a leader amongst trade associations in terms of professional standards, emphasis of ethical business practices and creating opportunities for new designers.
Founded in 1962, the CFDA was created to raise appreciation of the nascent enterprise of fashion arts. The organization is composed of 350 of America’s most esteemed fashion, jewelry and accessory designers. They recognize the leading creative talent in the industry, and offer instruction in professional development, as well as educational opportunities and scholarships, including the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, the Geoffrey Beene Design Scholar Award, the Liz Claiborne Scholarship Award, and the CFDA/Teen Vogue Scholarship. Designers who are selected for membership are provided unique opportunities through the Business Services Network, a high-profile set of companies, including the Gilt Groupe and Swarovski.
Membership is invitation only, and is open to American designers residing in the United States or abroad. International designers whose businesses are based principally in the United States are also eligible. The election of each new member is considered by the Admissions Committee who in turn, makes its recommendations to the CFDA’s Board of Directors which places the deciding vote on an applicant’s suitability.

Once a designer is elected as a member, they will see new opportunities within their grasp; connections with respected and established designers, and prospects that will make their competition foam at the mouth. Diane von Furstenberg, Anna Sui, Marc Jacobs; CFDA members and successful designers who worked their way to the top after years of toil; they understand the importance of having a thick skin to survive in an industry where the fruit of their labor is deemed obsolete with the close of the season.
Any designer who is serious about a career in the fashion industry should make attaining membership in the CFDA a priority. Whether they are just venturing out into the competitive arena of fashion or have been paying their dues for a while, remember this key piece of advice: once you have your foot in the door, don’t be afraid to kick it wide open.
