When Gallery Atlantic spoke last year with Yuli Ziv, founder and Editor-In-Chief of MyItThings.com, she said that what’s hot for Jewelry in 2009 is Big and Bold. We recently caught up with Yuli while she was in her Manhattan studio and asked her take on the hot jewelry trends for 2010. Her answer: It’s bigger it’s bolder it’s throw it's asymmetrical– it’s more about making a statement.
Yuli said, "I think that jewelry has become more a part of clothing and accessories. I see that a lot of fashion designers got into jewelry recently and when they create jewelry, they think about complementing their clothes. It's a totally different approach from traditional jewelry companies that are creating pendants and earrings. [Many Jewelry Designers] didn't start from the outfit, they just created those traditional pieces. Today's [fashion] designers think about their collection and their vision and how the jewelry can be incorporated in it."

What’s going on with Jewelry Fashion for 2010?
Yuli Ziv: It’s an exciting time for the jewelry market; it’s such an easy way to update your wardrobe. I feel that more and more women invest in jewelry because it’s kind of a timeless accessory. Instead of just buying an entire new wardrobe they buy a statement jewelry piece and that updates their look.
What sort of trends are you seeing?
Yuli Ziv: In [the] Fashion [Scene] we see a lot of exciting developments in the last few years and Fashion Jewelry made it into this trend... 2010 is going to be even more creative!
For example?
Yuli Ziv: It's unconventional - asymmetrical necklaces, trying new placements like body jewelry like ankle bracelets. Shoes were such a big focus for designers [in 2009] – I have seen necklaces for shoes, I guess you would call it ankle bracelets but people wear it on top of their shoes! They want to update last season's “plain shoe” by putting a piece of jewelry on top of it. This suddenly creates a new look and really draws attention.
Subversive Jewelry and Dr. Martens
So, we are moving away from the “traditional” jewelry look?
Yuli Ziv: I have seen chains that go across the body which creates a cool addition to the clothes. I see more and more experimenting and going away from the traditional necklace-bracelet-earring-combo.
What sort of materials for jewelry are “in” now?
Yuli Ziv: Unpolished metals and stones even wood… people are experimenting with materials. It’s not about classic and really elegant pieces; it’s more about raw materials… It goes beyond jewelry, it’s more about accessories: it’s bigger it’s bolder it’s asymmetrical – it’s more about making a statement.
Is “Vintage” still going to be in style for 2010?
Yuli Ziv: Vintage is definately here to stay for at least a few more years – there are some designers who are incorporating vintage elements into their jewelry.
Who is your favorite Jewelry/Accessory Designer for 2010?
Yuli Ziv: Suzanna Dai
Co-founder of the Style Coalition, founder of the fashion news/networking site MyItThings, and leader of the monthly Fashion 2.0 discussion panels, Ziv says bolder, bigger and vintage jewelry will be the hot trend for 2010.
