How to Care for Satin Scarves

by: Bracha Garland

Nearly everyone owns some item of clothing which is made from satin, be it a scarf or a pair of ballet style slippers. A delicate and luminous material, most people make the mistake of classifying it as fabric, when it is really a type of weave. The special way the threads are woven together is what gives satin that smooth luster, which is its most recognizable characteristic. Another false assumption is that satin is a natural fiber; it isn’t, unlike silk, it is completely synthetic- but it may contain natural fibers, like silk.

There are several types of satin, each characterized by their unique texture and sheen. Crepe back is an elegant, reversible fabric distinguished by its high shine. Its weft is made from a highly coiled thread and the warp consists of smooth strand threads. Another type of satin with a high thread count is Duchesse satin. The texture is crisp and airy. Silk duchesse satin is often used in scarves, as well as evening dresses and bridal gowns.

The manner of care is dependent on the type of threads used in the weave:

*  Acetate and silk weave satins should only be dry cleaned. Nylon and polyester may be washed on the delicate cycle in cold water, using a mild detergent.

*  Satin should be hung dry, or laid flat on top of a ventilated surface. Never, ever put satin in the dryer, as it will ruin the material.

Removing stains from satin scarves is difficult, but it is possible. Find a stain removal detergent which is “satin safe.” A good trick is to soak the stained area in club soda for 10 minutes; this will stop the stain from setting and will loosen the pigment from the fibers. Using a solution of warm water and a mild detergent, soak the stained area for another ten minutes. Use a ratio of ½ cup detergent per 3 cups of water. Avoid irritating the skin on your hands by wearing a pair of latex gloves. Gently blot the fabric with a sponge, dabbing lightly to remove the stain. Do not rub the material, as rubbing can ruin the fabric. As the stain fades, soak the material for another 5 minutes and continue blotting with the sponge until the stain has disappeared. Rinse the scarf with warm water until all of the detergent solution has been washed out. Lay the satin scarf flat to dry and remember: do not put it in the dryer!

Satin items, such as scarves and shoes, add an element of elegance to your wardrobe. Take care of your satin scarves by washing and storing them in the proper manner.
