New York Times Fashion Section

Fashion Editor: Karla M. Martinez

by: Karin Kloosterman Exclusively for Gallery Atlantic

Over in the newspaper business, fashion editors have more freedom to report on events as they unfold. Unlike magazines that take months in lead time until a publication runs, newspapers can report on trends and events daily and weekly. Reaching Vogue may be an impossible dream for a young designer, but getting into a newspaper like the New York Times fashion section, a more reasonable expectation.

A good place to start your wooing is with the down-to-earth fashion editor Karla M. Martinez, who besides working for the Times fashion sector, blogs for The Moment, a New York Times fashion section blog. She also edits the media empire’s fashion magazine supplement T.

Karla M. Martinez is a blogger for The Moment

Blacklisted from certain events (something a designer wouldn’t dare do to Wintour) –– but  not afraid to say so –– Martinez talks straight up to her fashion-conscious readership. At the The Moment, she writes about her favorite best buys of the month, what’s in, and even how to repair much-loved fashions items that have been loved too much.

Street fashion, events of the decade, and getting good deals on T-shirts that resemble the higher priced brand, and mixing them with high-end designer jackets are ways that Martinez promotes and supports the fashion industry. Her pieces give readers fashion choices. If you have a limited budget, she can whittle down the must-haves of the season, while at the same time give the spend-happy fashion lovers lots of options.

In designer jewelry news, she recently wrote a piece in the New York Times fashion section on must-have rings for the season. Worn in multiples, her favorites are some of Gallery Atlantic’s top choices too: an oxidized white gold band with diamonds for $950 at Ivanka Trump, a white gold Empriente ring for $1,320 at Louis Vuitton and a $3,450 David Yurman ring. But she also offers less pricy fashions that ring for the budget shopper, like a $300 Charlotte Bjorlin D’Elia faceted silver band.

Reading Martinez is reminiscent of Rebecca Bloomwood, the Girl With the Green Scarf, or the young fashion journalist in the movie Confessions of a Shopaholic. Getting in her good books, and a review, might only require packing up a small sample from your inventory, and sending it off to the New York Times Fashion Section, addressed to Martinez. Better still, tie a bow around it and say Gallery Atlantic sent you.  :-)
