The jewelry designs of Justin Giunta under his brand name, Subversive Jewelry, are well known and easily recognized in the designer and fashion world. While there is a common aesthetic feeling of "over-the-top" to almost all Subversive Jewelry designs, Giunta does use various themes in his jewelry lines. The one I want to rave about today: Pirate Jewelry (with and without skulls).
Two Subversive Jewelry collections that speak to me when I dream about channeling the spirit of the Jolly Roger are the, aptly named, Sunken Treasure Collection and many pieces from the Calder's Circus Collection as well.
While it doesn't have any skulls or parrots in it the Subversive Jewelry collection titled Sunken Treasure really does invoke the image of a pile of loot in a treasure chest. Justin Giunta uses vintage-antique chains, pearls, and many sizes of beads, irregularly shaped semi-precious stones and charms to get the pirate's booty look we love so much.
Next we have some specific items in the Calder's Circus Collection. First, are the Pirate Pearl Necklace and the Skull and Tassel Earrings (I don't think Justin Giunta found it too difficult to name these pieces). These both have vintage pearls and antique chains. The necklace and each earring have a wooden skull that hangs inside of a shell circle. The look screams "PIRATE". This set is a great choice for someone that finds the Sunken Treasure collection to be too subtle a reference.
If one skull isn't enough for you, you could go instead with Subversive Jewelry's Double Strand Pirate's Deck Necklace. While short on chains compared to most of the Justin Giunta creations, this necklace has 7 (I had to count three times) wooden skulls, shell rings and vintage plastic balls in red and in black. The Skull and Saturn Earrings that match have just one wooden skull each with a "Saturn" created with a black bead hanging inside of a shell ring. This necklace does a great job with the pirate look, but would work well with the cannibal look too.
I love how many of Justin Giunta's creations have the perfect feel for those of us who adore the pirate look, and I am so glad that Subversive Jewelry offers a pretty wide price range of options for the necklaces and earrings I wrote about in a Post about Justin Giunta and Dr. Marten. Pearls, chains, skulls and treasure: pirate jewelry that warms my bones, matey. Arr.
