Tory Burch was a self-taught up and coming designer, but it was celebrity placement on Oprah in March 2005 that enabled the world to discover the talent and attitude of this exciting young fashion designer. The appearance on Oprah quickly propelled the fresh fashion designer with significant potential into international prominence. Now Tory Burch is a world-class name and a fashion "rock star." While she certainly would have made it on her own, with her flair, intelligence and determination, the Oprah appearance sped up the process to fame. When Oprah declared Tory Burch's style as "the next big thing" in fashion, she achieved the international name recognition she truly deserved.  

Since that ‘magical moment’ back in 2005, Tory Burch’s style has become a distinct and recognizable look embraced by thousands of women, and has been described as "preppy Bohemian." celebrity placement on the Oprah TV show or even on the back of a celebrity can completely change a designer's status; from just recognizing her designs, people now say "Oh, that's Tory Burchesque."


Why does a single TV appearance have such a huge effect on a designer's career? What difference can an hour (or, given the commercials and other segments in the show) 20 minutes really make? Celebrities make or break fashion. It is true in the world of publishing with Oprah's book picks and it is no less true with what she wears or what styles she chooses to feature.

Oprah is a volcanic media force in her own right. A TV appearance on Oprah doesn't merely remain "TV" but means space in her magazine and on her website. This doesn't even begin to touch upon the myriad forms of commentary on Oprah, from blogs to newspaper articles to talk shows in which hosts talk about what was on Oprah.

However, celebrity placement isn't only about Oprah. When a designer has his or her creation appear on the famous body, that doesn't just mean a few photographs, but instant placing in a magazine with a caption describing what the celebrity is wearing, or blog, websites and fashion programs featuring news about what the said star had on that day or evening.

So how does a fashion designer achieve celebrity placement?  The simple answer is an excellent PR agent who understands the way to appeal to celebrities and has a command of the media.
