Care For Jewelry

by:

How do I clean my pearls?

1)  Whenever you take off you pearls, always wipe them gently with a warm, damp cloth.  This removes body oils and dirt, both of which can discolor a pearl.

2)  On occasion, take a soft cloth and a mild, detergent-free soap to wash your pearls more thoroughly.  Then, rinse the pearls in fresh water and let them dry while wrapped in a thin cotton towel.

3)  Acetone (nail polish remover) can be used to clean pearls which are particularly dirty.  NEVER use jewelry cleaners which contain ammonia or vinegar.

What else might damage my pearls?

1)  Substances such as hairspray, perfume, and make-up can damage the surface of your pearls if sprayed on them.  This is why your pearls should always be the last thing you put on.

2)  Detergents, chlorine bleach, vinegar, and ammonia can all damage your pearls, so make sure you never use these substances on your pearls.

3)  Excessive sweat can also damage pearls – so be sure to remove them before exercising.

When do I have to restring my pearls?

If you wear it on a weekly basis, you should restring your pearls every year.  In other words, after you have worn them about 50 times.

Why do I have to restring my pearl necklace?

After you have worn your pearl necklace or bracelet approximately 50 times, the string becomes looser.  If you do not get your necklace restrung, the loose string can widen the holes on your beads so that your pearls do not hang evenly.

Can I restring my pearl necklace myself?

Not unless you are a professional.  Pearls need to be strung on special silk string and they should be knotted separately.  This prevents them from rubbing against each other too much – otherwise wear could show on the nacre.  It takes skill and experience to knot it correctly so that the necklace looks beautiful after restringing.
